Fundraising Introduction

A large number of fundraising ideas are detailed on this site, or you can download our useful leaflet "How You Can Help" (in PDF Format - 168KB) by clicking here.

You can support the Iain Rennie Hospice At Home in many different ways. Every gift, large or small, of money or of time, brings real benefits for our patients and their families as it enables us to provide the specialist nursing care and support they need.

Our small team of fundraisers has to raise nearly £1 million each year through fundraising a donations so all offers of help are greatly received. The fundraising team exists to encourage and support fundraising initiatives of all types and also to raise public awareness.

We set high standards for all aspects of fundraising and have a strong belief in the work of our nurses. This is encapsulated in our Fundraising Philosophy.

Community Fundraiser interviews the Offa's Dyke policeman to find out more about their tough Challenge

Darren and Trevor

Q. I understand that you (Darren Clawson) and your friend Trevor Collett intend to set off along the Offa's Dyke national trail pathway which runs for 177 miles from Sedbury Cliffs on the Severn Estuary near Chepstow to Prestatyn on Liverpool Bay in April 2007. You will be doing this challenge to raise money for the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home. Why have you chosen Iain Rennie?

A. The inspiration for our challenge is a lady called Anne Brown, who was a special person. Those who knew her can't help but give a smile when you mention her name, which most of us do on a regular basis. I still find it hard to believe that in March 2006 she was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and on the 5 th April 2006 she passed away. During this time The Iain Rennie Hospice at home nurses cared for her with compassion, dedication and skill. But it wasn't only Anne that they nursed, they tended the broken hearts of her family and friends too, and gave them the strength to help her when they could and let her go when the time came. Then they came back and helped them deal with the loss.

Q. Have you done anything like this before?

A. Errr NO (ha ha) – but I really wanted to do something that was a little bit different to the usual 10K, marathon runs etc. (Trevor)

Q. So tell us why you have chosen to walk Offa's Dyke in particular, are there any particular links, for example, somewhere you used to holiday as a family?

A. (Trevor) Well I have done lots of training on Brecken Beacons before and have always found the Offa Dyke really interesting. I've know about Offa's Dyke for about 15 years and it is something that I have always wanted to do.

Q. Can you tell us exactly how you plan to approach this challenge.

A. Down the M4! No seriously, we've been doing lots of personal training . Two hours of training everyday. Endurance training, both running on the road and in the gym on treadmills. We are also doing non-impact training – swimming and cycling. We will steadily increase our fitness but we need to be really careful that we don't get injured before the big event. We are also on a high protein, high carb diet…….and no drinking alcohol until after the event (well we'll try).

Q. And what sort of thing will you eat whilst doing the Challenge?

A. Pie and chips and a couple of pints at the end of a hard day, surely! No, we we will need to keep up the high protein and high carbs diet as much as we can. We will also be eating high complex sugars and special gel drinks which help your muscles to recover overnight.

Q. I understand that you are not only setting yourselves a tough challenge physically, but you are also setting yourselves a very tough fundraising target?

A. Yes we are, the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home needs to raise £2.7m this year to fund their 24/7 nursing service at home. This year they expect to care for over 800 patients and their families. IRHH launched an Emergency Appeal in September 2006 to raise an additional £200K by the end of March 07 due to a shortfall in income. We want to help them achieve this all important target by raising £15,000. A tough target but we hope with the support of friends, family, colleagues and the local community that we will help them to make a difference.

Q. Wow, that is a challenge. How exactly do you plan to riase the £15K?

A. We have manged to cover the costs of the event – local companies have sponsored our kit and transport.. Now we are concentrating on training and fundraising. Our main focus is to get as much coverage as possible promoting our challenge and the cause, mainly through press coverage and word of mouth. We have also been donated a Yamaha scooter which we will be auctioning.

We have also set up a Just Giving fundraising webpage. To sponsor us all you need to do is log onto www.justgiving.com/darrentrevor. Alternatively you can call Louise Breen at Iain Rennie on 01442 890222.

We really do appreciate everyone who sponsors us, whatever the size of the donation, as it is showing support for such a great cause. Every penny will count towards the Emergency Appeal.

Q. You mention you have managed to get sponsorship to cover your costs?

A. Yes Quenby Bros Subaru is providing a Subaru Forrester 4x4 sign written with ‘Offa's Dyke Endurance Challenge 2007' and our web address from 16th to 27th of April 2007. They are covering the insurance and providing full tank of petrol. They will also be making a £100 donation on the web site and providing some Subaru t-shirts/ woolen hats etc.

ARO Sports are providing all of our specialist running kit, including trainers, shorts, t-shirts, tops and some peripherals including gels, Body-glide (which stops sores and skin irritation) and double layered socks which reduce the amount of blistering.

AMMO have provided 2 pairs of LOWA mountain boots, 2 Camelback drinking systems and 2 Bergen's.
