The IRHH nursing teams are currently operating with less than a full compliment of nurses, which makes running the 24/7 service a challenge. Estelle Houston and Suzanne McKay will be the two nurses from the Dacorum team working on Christmas Day, and with over 65 cases on their books, they will be out visiting patients while most of us are in the warm with our families, eating too much food or watching Christmas TV. Estelle will also be on-call overnight, responding to the needs of patients who call the out-of-hours service. Estelle explains: “It's vital that we are there for the patients and families that need us at this particularly difficult time. Missing out on our own family activities is a small price to pay for making life more comfortable for people dealing with the trauma created by a terminal illness, and it is a privilege to be able to help. A visit on Christmas Day will help families caring for a sick relative cope with the day and hopefully they will be able to enjoy some of the Christmas festivities in spite of their difficulties”. |
June and her family from Kings Langley know that it will be difficult dealing with Colin's illness this Christmas. “With so many services not available at Christmas, we really need and look forward to the visits from the IRHH nurses; I don't know what we would do without them. I hope they can have a piece of Christmas cake with us as part of our Christmas Day'' suggests June.
Recruiting more nurses to the IRHH teams across the Chilterns is not proving to be easy. Sue Varvel , IRHH Director of Nursing, attributes those problems with the NHS locally, saying: “It's difficult to maintain a safe and effective 24hr service with a limited number of nurses, and it's our priority to ensure our teams are fully staffed. What we really need now is to hear from nurses who want to get back to the work they were trained to do. Working with people facing the end of their life is very rewarding and we can make such a difference to these people and those close to them.”
