A Very British Afternoon at the Thames Traditional Boat Rally - Lots of Water and Wellies!

Boats on a very fast flowing river

On Saturday 21st July around 100 guests enjoyed an afternoon near Henley on Thames at the Thames Traditional Boat Rally. It was an event that very nearly didn't happen following Friday's freak deluge of rain. The Caterers were unable to access the marquee the day before the event as it was in the middle of a lake of flood water. Rally Organiser Peter Meech and his team were working until 3.30am pumping away flood water, which rose to over a foot deep INSIDE the marquee.

Guests braved the conditions on Saturday which remained somewhat damp under foot sporting wellies with their suits or summer dresses. A very British spirit was on show in the marquee as guests refused to let the weather get in the way of enjoying lunch and afternoon tea. Sadly the scheduled steam boat rides were cancelled as the river was running too high and fast. A number of boats were unable to reach the rally because the water was so high under Henley bridge it did not give them sufficient clearance.

IRHH are very grateful to Michael Shanly Group, sponsors of the event, who funded the marquee and catering, to Peter Meech and his team plus caterers, Elegant Cuisine, for all their hard work in very difficult circumstances.  We are also very grateful to Mrs Rosemary Higgs who provided the beautiful floral arrangements, went out to collect the flowers on the morning of her own wedding and waded through the water on Friday afternoon to deliver them!

The following day we realised just how fortunate we had been. The Thames burst its banks at Henley that morning, completely flooding out the entire rally!
