The Blisterz Group take on a walking challenge in the Lake District

Jen and Grant on Skiddaw Ridge

On Friday 13th July, the Blisterz group travelled to their chosen destination in the Lake District to prepare for their walking challenge – a 10 hour journey in pouring rain! In spite of this, determination was good, although one of the walkers did have to withdraw because she was unwell.

Eventually, 8 walkers set out at 11.15am on 14 th , with a spot of rain in the air, walking through beautiful countryside towards Keswick. As the day progressed, waterproof coats were packed away and the group was blessed with dry weather for the remainder of the walk – this was quite unexpected.

A picture attached is of two of the party on Skiddaw Ridge, which the group climbed in the late afternoon, and it shows how stunning the scenery was from such a vantage point.  The walkers continued right through the night, with pit stops every few hours to grab a hot drink. Many a boggy field was crossed and the group were apprehended by a security guard on the edge of a large estate, whilst marching along a woodland path wearing head torches (on the marked footpath of course – just not a route usually taken in the middle of the night)! By morning, the walkers were on the road walking along the Solway Firth and eventually all eight swung past Grune Point and completed the 50 mile challenge in 23 hours……………celebrating with a quick glass of fizz on a grass verge, before collapsing back into the support vehicle to travel to a “recovery” hotel. A picture attached shows one walker asleep on the grass before he even boarded the vehicle!

The Blisterz fund raising event, to celebrate the walkers' achievement and raise some more cash, was held the following weekend. Although the weather was not so kind, more than 90 revellers danced the night away to NBS in a local garden, sustained by a homemade supper and a few drinks. All the walkers danced, and the picture attached shows one party goer in a splendid pair of wellies, which were definitely the most sensible footwear on this occasion.

Sponsorship money is still being collected and will be added to the income from the “do” as soon as possible. Two of the walkers have personal connections with Iain Rennie Hospice at Home and CTRT – so the group knows that the money raised is much needed. Well worth a few blisters and a lot of yawning for a few days.
