3 Peaks Conquered

Jon Horton challenge group on Scafell Pike at 5am

On the weekend of 9th June, Jon Horton bravely took part in the 3 Peaks Challenge to raise money for IRHH.

Jon, “Safely back in one piece after our triumph. I completed the challenge in 23 hours and 30 minutes.

I am delighted to tell you that I have raised just over £1200 for The Iain Rennie Hospice At Home.

The weather was on our side and the sun shone gloriously (maybe too gloriously) throughout Scotland , England & Wales . Although despite the temperature being at around 22-24 degrees it was rather bizarre trudging across about 1 metre of compacted snow at the very top of Ben Nevis.

We started our challenge at 3pm and completed Ben Nevis in 5.5 hours. The heat took its first casualty though and one of our team members withdrew from exhaustion. After some hot food supplied by our support crew (and some pints of medicinal Guinness) we left Scotland at 9pm for a 4.5 hour drive to arrive in Seathwaite in Cumbria at just after 1.30am on Saturday morning.

With headlamps at the ready, popping a few ibuprofen tablets to numb the knees, we headed off into the darkness. 5 hours later we were returning to the vehicles after putting a tick in the box for Scafell Pike . However the strain was starting to show and another member withdrew. Another 4 members were trailing by about 30 minutes and asked the remaining 3 of us not to wait but to press on ahead to Wales.

A quick turnaround and we were away in the cars, juggling our hot chicken and paste bake in our laps, whilst our drivers weaved through the Cumbrian countryside possessed by the goal to get us to Wales in double quick time. They achieved and we arrived at Pen Y Pass at 11.15 am.

The fine weather had attracted the masses to walk Snowdon and the car park was a mass of knobbly knees and walking boots. With just over 4 hours remaining and the sun beating down we all knew that only a few of us had a chance at the 24 hour goal. More ibuprofen, water and glucose tablets and off we went. Heads down and a non stop attitude we reached the summit in 1.5 hours and returned to complete the challenge at 2.30pm . We were greeted by our trusty support crew with some welcomed champagne.

A fabulous experience and delighted to have supported your charity and to have reached my fund raising goal.”

With thanks to Jon Horton and his support team for their wonderful efforts to raise money for IRHH.
