Policeman Darren and Trevor complete their challenge

On 19th April 2007, Darren Clawson and friend Trevor Collett set off along the Offa's Dyke national trail pathway which runs for 177 miles from Sedbury Cliffs on the Severn Estuary near Chepstow to Prestatyn on Liverpool Bay to raise money for the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home.

Their challenge involved running/walking 180 miles in six days, across some of the most challenging terrain in England and Wales.

Their account of the trip:

“Well, we completed the challenge in the allocated six days with a total running time of approximately 46 hours. Taking into consideration the broken ground, mountains, muscle injuries and blistered feet we ran large parts of the route with, it starts to look nothing short of miraculous that we actually finished at all! I feel it's important to give you an idea of the spirit that kept us going and helped forge memories that I'm sure will entertain and inspire us all for years to come.

On day five we were all at our lowest ebb, chins were on the floor and the pain of the muscle injuries and blistered feet had reduced our run to contorted stagger at some points. Gareth, our support driver had ditched the vehicle and set out along the route as well in an attempt to raise spirits and as I climbed steadily towards yet another peak the cold was seeping into my bones and I had begun to contemplate how I could possibly cover the remaining 21 miles of the day. I approached the fence of the field I was in and saw an A4 piece of paper pinned to it. The message simply read “GET YOUR ASS IN GEAR PEG-LEG”. I laughed my way through the next five miles.

We organised the challenge to honour the memory of Anne Brown and raise some money for IRHH, the charity that looked after her, and I'm convinced that if she had been around to see our dedication and determination she would have been proud of us all. Please continue to donate as the fundraising goes on, and if you have any ideas for next years challenge leave them in the comments section on our Just Giving website! Be sure to make it a monster though, we've got a taste for this now!” Darren and Trevor.

The End!
Of course the event involved lots of commitment, hard work and training before hand too. Two hours of training everyday, endurance training, both running on the road and in the gym on treadmills, as well as non-impact training – swimming and cycling. They steadily increased their fitness whilst trying to stay injury free before the big event.

The guys also worked hard on securing sponsorship to cover some of the costs of their event too – local companies kindly sponsored their kit and transport.

Darren, “I did the last 60 miles with a torn quad and feet I could hardly stand on. It's taken two days for the swelling to go down enough for me to get a pair of trainers on again!”

If you would like to help boost Darren and Trevor's sponsorship to make all that hard work, pain and effort even more worth while then you can sponsor them online at www.justgiving.com/darrentrevor

Many thanks to these brave (and slightly crazy) men for their support.
