Esther Rantzen was at Aylesbury College on Thursday 3rd April to give the inaugural Iain Rennie lecture. Her lecture, entitled "Who Cares?", drew on her experiences at the time of the deaths of close family members and the extensive research that went into the making of her 2006 BBC television programme, "How To Have A Good Death". Whilst valuing and praising the excellent work of hospices (in particular the 24 hour on-call hospice at home service provided by the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home of which she is a patron), Esther highlighted the urgent need for more choice for people around the place of their own death and, as just 6% of UK deaths occur in a hospice setting, she strongly advocated the establishment of more hospice at home services. The Iain Rennie Augural Lecture was introduced by Peter Cullimore, a governor of Aylesbury College and long-standing supporter of Iain Rennie. IRHH Chief Executive, Rowena Dean, introduced Esther Rantzen and IRHH Director of Nursing, Sue Varvel, gave a vote of thanks. An audience of around 90 people including hospice and college staff, supporters and students enjoyed a drinks reception provided by college students. The evening concluded with a balloon launch organised by Aylesbury College which raised £176 |
