Joy's Garden Day

Joy and Karen's cousin Paula on the Garden Day

Joy Clarkson's "Garden Day" is well known around Knutsford in Cheshire and on Saturday 8th June, her tiny garden, tucked away in the corner of a Cheshire field, was full of people buying plants, handmade cards and enjoying homemade refreshments.

Joy's daughter, Karen Breakwell, was nursed by the Iain Rennie Hospice At Home back in 1988 and Joy has never stopped supporting the hospice at home nurses where Karen's husband, Robert, is now Appeals Director.

"People know what the hospice means to me," she said "and Rob and I were so grateful to Margaret and Daphne and the other nurses who looked after Karen not long after Iain Rennie started."

Joy lost her husband, John, last year and her beautiful garden has become something of a memorial to him and to Karen. Every inch of the garden is packed with flowers and plants, all grown by Joy, and people come for miles to buy bedding plants and hanging baskets.

Joy likes to keep busy: when the weather's good she loves to spend time in her garden, and when it rains she can often be found embroidering cards.
