New Mayor of High Wycombe Pledges Support

In accordance with ancient tradition, the new mayor is weighed in as he takes office
The new Mayor of High Wycombe, Cllr Ian McEnnis, has chosen to support the Iain Rennie Hospice At Home during his year in office. The announcement was made at the Mayor Making Ceremony in the town on Saturday 18th May 2002. Cllr McEnnis was "weighed in" at 13st 5lbs as part of the official ceremony which has an ancient tradition in the town

At his reception at the Royal British Legion, Cllr McEnnis said, "We are very fortunate to have a team of 9 nurses actually based here in High Wycombe. They are caring for a growing number of patients in the town and my wife, Sarah, and I have committed ourselves to raising money to ensure that more people can benefit from the specialist service provided by the nurses when they need it."

Cllr and Mrs McEnnis have recently visited the Iain Rennie office at Cedar Barn, Hazlemere and have spent time with the Iain Rennie Nurses based there. During their visit, they learned more about the Iain Rennie service which, through a 24 hour on-call service, enables patients to remain in their own homes during the final stages of a terminal illness.

Cllr McEnnis's first public engagement will take place on the morning of Monday 20th May when he intends to accompany one of the Iain Rennie Nurses on a visit to a patient in High Wycombe.

The first official engagement for the new Mayor of High Wycombe, Cllr Ian McEnnis, was a visit to a patient receiving care from the Iain Rennie Hospice At Home. Cllr McEnnis has chosen to support the Hospice At Home charity which has a team of 9 nurses working in the town during his year in office.

Cllr McEnnis accompanied Iain Rennie nurse, Karen Redford, on a routine visit to patient Vena Keen who lives in Booker at 12noon on Monday 20th May.

Mrs Keen, who is 78 has lived in Wycombe all her life. She has had cancer for 18 years, but was referred to the Iain Rennie Hospice At Home in mid March by her Elderly Care Practitioner. Iain Rennie Support Nurse, Karen Redford, has been visiting Mrs Keen on a regular basis to provide her with advice on medication and emotional support.

Karen said "We have been able to help Mrs Keen in a number of ways. She has access to our 24 hour on-call line and recently needed to use it when she suddenly became unwell. We were able to respond quickly and get urgent treatment for her."

Cllr McEnnis and his wife Sarah recently spent a day with nurses, volunteers and staff at the Iain Rennie Hospice At Home which has an office in Hazlemere. He said, "Sarah and I were very impressed with the commitment and dedication of everyone at Iain Rennie. Their work is all about making life better for people and we are fortunate to have such a marvellous service in our town.
