On Saturday 18th June, Amersham was the grooviest place in the Chilterns as Fern Britton led the fifth annual Goodnight Walk as it wound its way around the town on both a 5 mile and a 10 mile route.
Over 100 walkers joined Fern to walk through the night to raise money for the IRHH home nursing service. Although numbers were disappointingly low, there was a great party atmosphere created in no small part by the ‘70's theme for the walk. Flares, sequins and whacky wigs galore combined with the sound of the ‘70's from our very own DJ to set the scene for the walk. Prior to the start at midnight, Fern led the walkers in a lively warm up routine to the ‘70's favourite from the Village People, YMCA, inspiring everyone to start the walk with a great party spirit. Fern said:

“The numbers for the walk may have been down this year, but the atmosphere was better than ever. I was so impressed with the efforts that people made to get into the ‘70's spirit – there were some fantastic ideas and I had a whale of a time. The highlight for me was the sight of Rennie Bear, the charity's mascot, sashaying up the road in a true ‘70's boogie. Priceless! On behalf of IRHH I would like to thank everyone who gave up their time to do the walk. Every penny raised will be a real help to local families.”
Inside the Rennie Bear costume, was our very own Princes Risborough Shop Manager, Lorna MacKay who described the challenge of walking 5 miles dressed as a bear:

“It was certainly interesting! I was relying on other people to warn me about unexpected obstacles as its difficult to see out of the Bear costume in daylight, let alone when it's pitch black. My legs were definitely very tired by the end of the route as the walking action with paws is rather different to my usual one! Still, I wouldn't have missed it for the world. It was great fun.”

A £25 gift voucher for local sport shops Hawkinsport was awarded jointly to sisters Rebecca and Claire Saunders for their psychedelic ‘70's costumes and Fern has kindly donated a signed copy of her novel “New Beginnings” which will be awarded to the person who raises the most amount of sponsorship when all the money has been received.
Anyone who would like to support IRHH, can still visit justgiving.com to sponsor Fern or Rennie Bear:
Attention at IRHH will now turn to the organisation's next major event - the Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge - which takes place on Sunday 18th September and follows the last 18 miles of the Ridgeway trail, scaling the 3 peaks of Whiteleaf Cross, Coombe Hill and Ivinghoe Beacon .
Or if walking isn't your cup of tea – why not host a Wimbledon - themed ‘Big Brew' to raise funds for our nursing service? All the details are available on our Big Brew page.
