Rhyme and Reason

The Rhyme & Reason Fundraising Group publishes an anthology of stories, poems and articles by new and established writers in aid of the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home every year. To date, the Group has raised well over £40,000 in aid of IRHH.

2010 Poetry Competition Winners

The Rhyme & Reason Fundraising Group is delighted to announce the winners of the 2010 Poetry Competition. With the usual high standard of entries, judging was not an easy task but the Group is sure that the winning poems will be well received and appreciated when published in ‘Anniversary', the 2011 edition of ‘Rhyme & Reason'. ‘Anniversary' will be launched in October this year, at the Rhyme & Reason 20th Anniversary Celebration Dinner to be held at Hall Barn in Beaconsfield.

The Group would like to thank Gerard Benson for once again judging the entries, to Maddie Blackburn, former Iain Rennie Hospice at Home CEO, and her husband Paul Dennison for sponsoring the prizes, and to everyone who entered the competition this year.

New for this year was the Young Poet prize, with a very worthy winner providing a beautiful poem. All winners are listed below, with their poems available to view by clicking here.

1st Prize
‘Planting the Snow Queen' by Denise Bennett (Hampshire)

2nd Prize
‘Poem for a Final Anniversary' by Deborah Harvey (Bristol)

3rd Prize
‘Poppy Day' by Ellis Lloyd (Cheshire)

Young Poet Prize
‘All That Was' by Amy O'Farrell (Buckinghamshire)

Copies of ‘Anniversary' will be available after 23rd October, by emailing Joanne Hunt on jhunt@irhh.org at a cost of £5, plus post and packing.

20th Anniversary Celebration Dinner

The Group will be marking their 20th Anniversary with a Celebration Dinner to be held at Hall Barn in Beaconsfield on 23rd October. With a delicious 3 course meal, Bill Turnbull presiding over the evening, readings from Gerard Benson and Paul Eccentric and a raffle and auction during the evening. This event looks set to be a fitting way to celebrate this special year, whilst raising further funds for IRHH.

Tickets have now sold out for this event but watch this space for pictures and a report of the evening later in the year.

Committee Volunteers Required

The success of the Group continues to depend upon the hard work of a very dedicated and enthusiastic Committee. This established Group is looking to recruit additional volunteers to assist existing members in further developing ideas and plans for future fundraising activities.

If you have a general interest in creative writing, whether poetry or prose, and would like to find out more, the Group would love to hear from you. Of particular interest to the Group are people with experience in editing, sales and marketing or general Committee roles, although this is not essential. Group meetings are usually held in the Beaconsfield /Gerrards Cross area.

As well as producing the anthology, various fundraising events, with a social focus, are organised throughout the year. If you would like to be a part of this successful Group and help to make a difference for IRHH, please contact either Debbie Starrs, Rhyme & Reason Fundraising Group, at Debbiestarrs@aol.com or Joanne Hunt , IRHH Community Fundraiser, on jhunt@irhh.org or 01442 890222.

Fundraising Group Aims

To publish yearly a small book, the contents being a mixture of poems and short stories written by previous and new writers.

To strive to continually improve the quality of the book, both in content, appearance and style.

From time to time, to run competitions that invite entries from anyone - with the winners and best entries published in Rhyme & Reason, which in itself improves and varies the content of the book.

To sell as many books as possible, passing the revenue less costs, to the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home.

For more information on the Rhyme & Reason group please contact Joanne Hunt on 01442 890222 or email jhunt@irhh.org
