Sixty four triathletes, both novice and experienced, came together on Saturday 28 April 2012 to take part in the very first RAF Halton Sprint Triathlon.
The test was to complete 10 laps of a 30m pool, cycle 21k and then finish with a 5k run in the fastest time possible and all 64 competitors successfully completed the course. The event was organised jointly by RAF Halton and IRGH to raise money for the services IRGH provides to allow local patients with life-limiting illness the choice to be cared for at home.
The fastest time was recorded by Roland Kemp from Tring who came home in just 59 minutes and 23 seconds. Ashendon's Jo Gundle, a consultant children's orthopaedic surgeon at Stoke Mandeville hospital, was the second fastest woman with a time of one hour, twelve minutes and 29 seconds.
After the event there was a presentation with prizes for the fastest three men and the fastest three ladies. Jo was presented with vouchers (kindly donated by Ten Point Triathlon), by Major Keith Childs, the Station Duty Executive Officer at RAF Halton.
IRGH Events Organiser, Clair Evans said: “We would like to thank RAF Halton for hosting the event and for their continuing support. Particular thanks go to Corporal Matthew Nowicki who planned all the routes and worked so hard to make the day a success.
There was a great atmosphere, despite the rain, and so many happy and smiling faces at the finish line as people celebrated their achievement. We are well on our way to raising the pledged amount of £10,000 from the event which will be of invaluable help in supporting local patients with life-limiting illness and our thanks also go to everyone who took part and contributed to this great fundraising total.
Special thanks also go to our wonderful volunteers and marshals who turned out in really rainy conditions to ensure the safety of our competitors.”
