In Memory Of Lyn: Shelly Alexander And Her Family Raise £25,000

Shelly Alexander visited the IRHH office in Chalfont St Giles on Thursday 10th July to say an emotional 'thank you' to the three organisations that cared for her mum, Lyn Howe, who died in March 2008 after a two and a half year battle with cancer.  In a moving address, Shelly thanked the nurses from the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home, Marie Curie Cancer Care and the team at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre who had all been involved in caring for her mum.  Shelly then presented a cheque for £8,333 to each of the organisations in memory of her mum to further their work.

Shelly was accompanied by her husband, Paul, and daughter, Carla, who along with their younger daughter, Hollie, had all thrown their hearts and souls into raising over £25,000.  They also vowed that the fundraising would continue with Paul preparing to take part in the Wycombe Half Marathon and other plans in the pipeline.

Iain Rennie Nurse, Heather Ballard, accepted the cheque from Shelly on behalf of IRHH.  Along with her nurse colleague, Raelene Boots, Heather had been one of the nurses who had cared for Lyn during the final phase of her illness.  Helen Chester, a nurse with Marie Curie Cancer Care, who had also provided invaluable help to the family, accepted a cheque.  Shelly also presented a cheque to Dr Jeanette Dickson, Consultant at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, who, with her team, had worked hard to give Lyn the best quality of life.

Iain Rennie's Director of Nursing, Sue Varvel , said, "I know it was a great privilege for our nurses to have cared for Lyn and we thank Shelly and her family for this amazing gift and for the way they dedicated themselves to caring for Lyn so brilliantly, working alongside our nurses and our colleagues from Mount Vernon and Marie Curie.  This is a wonderful example of how different services can work together seamlessly to provide the very best possible care for patients whilst supporting their families through very difficult times.  The funds raised will pay for one of our nurses for 3 months and we thank Shelly and her amazing family for their great courage and generosity."
