Three friends from Berkhamsted and two friends are planning to walk five marathons in just five days, a total of 135 miles, and aim to raise over £5,000 for IRHH.

Jennifer, Amanda & Karen

Karen Buchanan, joined by her friends Jennifer Antonelli and Amanda Smith, will be walking in memory of Karen's late husband Mick, who was cared for by Iain Rennie nurses before his death five years ago.

They will set out on their multi-marathon challenge on 25th April, walking along the Grand Union Canal towpath from Birmingham to London. Their trek will take them through Bucks on 28th April and past Tring, Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead on 29th April. The friends were inspired by comedian Eddie Izzard, who ran 43 marathons in 51 days in aid of Sport Relief.

Mick Buchanan

Karen said: "The wonderful Iain Rennie nurses helped Mick in his last year of life, as well as supporting me and our children. Without that love and support, things would have been much harder to bear and much more terrifying. I will be walking on what would have been our 25 th wedding anniversary with my wonderfully supportive friends. Jennifer managed to convince us that if Eddie could do it, we could too, although we will be walking, not running! I could not think of a better tribute to Mick and to the exceptional and inspiring IRHH nurses."

Karen works as administration manager for the Pepper Foundation, which raises funds for the Pepper children's nurses, who are managed by IRHH. She added: "2010 is also the year when IRHH is celebrating 25 years of patient care. IRHH nurses are very special people. They ensured that Mick's life could continue in the best way possible when he was ill, and they helped our family to find the strength to deal with what was happening to us."

Karen, Jennifer and Amanda are looking forward to raising as much money as possible to help keep IRHH nurses on the road, caring for the many more patients and families who rely on them. If you would like to sponsor them please visit www.justgiving.com/marathonsformick or call 01442 890222 .
