A darts marathon organised in memory of a player from Tring has raised £2,205 for IRHH.
Gary Giddings, a married father of three and regular darts player at The Bell in Tring High Street, passed away last September. Gary's friend Gareth Johnson, with the support of Gary's widow Paula, his brother Craig, and pub landlords Matt Yelland and Tania Johnson, decided to organise a 24 hour darts marathon and over 30 people signed up to ensure that one of the dartboards in The Bell remained in constant use through the night.
The sponsorship raised from friends, family and local businesses, plus additional money from a raffle and auction, totalled over £4,500, which was split between IRHH and the Dr Littlewood Haematology Trials Fund. Both organisations had helped Gary through his illness and still support Paula and her family. Prizes were donated by local businesses and professional darts players who Gareth contacted, including James Wade, Ted Hankey and Kevin Painter.
Joanne Hunt, IRHH Community Fundraiser, commented: "We are very grateful to Gareth, to everyone who supported the marathon by taking part, donating prizes or sponsoring the event, and to Matt and Tania at The Bell for hosting the marathon. The money raised in memory of their friend, Gary, is testament to the hard work put in by everyone concerned."
Gareth has written a full account of the Darts Marathon, entitled "Darts Giving Back". Click here to read Gareth's story.
