Around 150 quiz enthusiasts packed the function room of Cressex Community Centre on the evening of Wednesday, December 14th for the Grand Final of High Wycombe Lions Club Pub Quiz competition.
The competition was set up in memory of two long-serving members of the Lions, John Crick and Terry Fendom, who died within a month of each other during the year. Nurses from Iain Rennie Hospice at Home provided outstanding support and care to the families during their final illnesses and the Club wanted to raise money for the charity in memory of them.
The Pub Quiz kicked off in September with rounds taking place in pubs across the area. Twenty-four teams - the winners and runners-up of each previous round - competed in the Final which was superbly run by quizmasters Graham Day and Alan Switalski. An Iain Rennie team also took part in the final with Brian Fowler (IRHH Ambassador), David Coles (Fundraising Volunteer), Pamela Hughes (Holmer Green Shop Manager), Joanne Hunt (Community Fundraising Manager), Claire Fazekas (Holmer Green shop Assistant Manager) and Gill Healey (volunteer) combining their quizzing know-how to achieve a respectable score of 116 out of 160 which placed them soundly in the middle of the field.
The overall winners were Knee Knee, a team representing The Boot at Bledlow Ridge. Lion President Nick Barber presented them with the Fendom-Crick Memorial Trophy, named in honour of the two former Club members, and also vouchers generously donated by the competition's sponsors, Booker Wholesale of High Wycombe.
The competition raised £3,000 and a cheque for this amount was presented to Joanne Hunt, Community Fundraising Manager of Iain Rennie. Joanne thanked everyone who had taken part throughout the weeks of the competition and said, "This money will go a very long way to help families and patients in this area receive nursing care." Joanne was also presented with a cheque for £200 from Elsie Probert which were the proceeds from a Golf Day held in memory of her husband Louis, who was also cared for by Iain Rennie Nurses.
