Live Theatre Events promise the most excitement at Berkhamsted Castle since 1066

The historical remains of Berkhamsted Castle will open its doors this summer to a series of open-air events sponsored by The Berkeley Gallery which will raise funds for Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care, The Pepper Foundation and The Hospice of St Francis.

The Berkeley Gallery is delighted to be spearheading a programme of 5 theatrical performances in conjunction with Illyria and Oddsocks theatre companies. The five events comprise: The Twits by Roald Dahl, HMS Pinafore by Gilbert & Sullivan and Henry V and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare.

The programme of events for 2012 is as follows:

Date Performance Time
Friday 1st June The Twits 7.00pm
Saturday 16th June Henry V 7.30pm
Saturday 1st September HMS Pinafore 7.30pm
Saturday 8th September The Twits 7.00pm
Saturday 22nd September Julius Caesar 7.30pm

This year's programme is building on the success of last summer when the first 'event' was held at Berkhamsted Castle in over 15 years as the Illyria theatrical company performed their version of Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Pirates of Penzance' to a sellout crowd of over 400.

Funds raised during 2011 were provided to The Berkhamsted Arts Trust. However, in view of the increase in the number of events being organised for 2012, it was proposed that various additional local and deserving charities benefit.

Organiser and owner of The Berkeley Gallery, Paul Rozelaar, said "the intention of the event last year was to set a precedent in showing that events at the Castle can work, and provide enjoyment for many, as well as provide increased exposure for the Castle. It was met with unanimous support and praise." Paul went on to say "through the website we hope to communicate future events at the castle for the benefit of our whole community."

Tickets cost from £10 for children (under 16) and from £18 for adults. Family tickets are also available for 2 adults and 2 children. Tickets can be purchased from The Berkeley Gallery, 39 - 43 Lower Kings Road, Berkhamsted and online at www.berkhamstedcastleevents.co.uk. Doors open at 6.30pm for each event and there will be a maximum number of tickets available per event of 500. Picnics can be booked and paid for in advance.
